Next to Tel Aviv, Asmara in Eritrea represents an outstanding example of modernist architecture.
Tel Aviv's famous International architecture is omnipresent.
What is less known is that a well-preserved ensemble of modern architecture from the 1930s can only be found in the same concentration in Asmara, the capital of Eritrea on the Horn of Africa. Many of the buildings created by architects of the former colonial power Italy in the futuristic, expressionistic and rationalistic architectural style still shape the cityscape of Asmara today. Often referred to as the 'most beautiful city on the African continent', Asmara with its avant-garde architecture has been included in the Unesco list of world cultural heritage recently.
